2011 Clarksville VA Lake Fest T-Shirt Design Winner!

I am so excited and honored to have won this year’s Lake Fest T-Shirt Design contest. Lake Fest is one of the biggest outdoor festivals in the eastern US, with over 100,000 visitors last year.

The winning design is below along with the article published in the newspapers. I’ll post some more photos when I get a shirt in my hands, which should be sometime in July.

As published in the The News-Progress and South Hill Enterprise:

“[Clarksville] Michael Jancart of Nelson, VA was named the winning artist of the official 2011 Lakesfest logo contest on March 15. Jancart was awarded $250 for his entry by Linda Williams, Executive Director of the Clarksville Lake Country Chamber of Commerce.

A five-member judging committee chose his original graphic design from multiple entries created in watercolor, oil, and other art medium.

According to the winning artist, “I wanted to take the most iconic parts, the most memorable events, the staples if you will, of Lakefest and create a clean, modern design that people would see and like,” said Jancart. “I wanted it to be something fun and lively, but not overdone, so I went with a minimal color palette, solid shapes and easy to read type,” added Jancart. The winning graphic is comprised of five colors—gold, blue, black, white and gray; the hot-air balloons and fireworks cleverly exemplify two important activities of the three-day event.

Jancart is a resident of Nelson and owner of Stand Still Designs; additionally, he currently serves as the Chamber’s Webmaster. He was born and raised near Pittsburg, PA and has lived in Ohio and North Carolina before settling in Nelson two years ago. He has attended four Lakefest events and is looking forward to this year’s activities.

The winner attended the Art Institute of Pittsburg, LIFE Bible College, and graduated from Liberty University with a BS, Magna Cum Laude, in Communication Studies/Graphic Design. Four years ago, he created Stand Still Designs; his services include web design, illustrations and graphic and print design. To view information and activities regarding his company, go online at www.michaljancart.com.

His plans for the prize money, you ask? He is planning to share the reward—first, he’ll take his wife and three daughters out to dinner; the remainder will be put towards a new all-in-one printer/scanner/copier for his office.

Jancart’s winning design will be featured on the official 2011 t-shirts and all other promotional event materials for the July 14-16 event.”

Dip (IF)

After a far-too-long hiatus… One’s BUMP in the road is another’s DIP!

The New Easal

Well, here it is, the new easal I built (Thanks for the example Jody!). It was much easier than I thought it’d be. I didn’t have a router for the groove in the center, which I thought was going to cause problems…but I was able to set the depth of my circular saw to cut out the grooves just right! I particularly like the hinges and the blocks below and above the “painting holders”. I praise God for His grace in making this. Anytime a project turns out this nicely I know His hand was upon me.

Wrapped (IF)

This is #2 in the Potty Training Mishaps Series…and illustration friday’s topic of the week (for you IFers here’s a link to last week’s “Impatience” that was #1 in the series…and that I didn’t finish until earlier today!) No, this hasn’t happened…yet. I’m definatly waiting for it though. Enjoy!

Impatience (IF)

I started this for last weeks Illustration Friday topic, but didn’t have time to finish. We are potty training my little girl right now, thus I was inspired… It is the first in a series of potty training mishaps! I’m working on one for this weeks IF topic “wrapped”.Impatience

Modify (IF)

Wow, am I late on this one. But it has taken all week for this idea to come to fruition in my head.

The only way my heart has ever been “modified” is through the power of God’s Spirit. I’ve tried to change on my own, but without His help, I’m like a dog returning to its vomit.

Jesus said that we don’t get what we want ’cause we don’t ask for it. So this is a reminder for me to ask God to change the things in me (pride, selfishness, anger, etc) that stink.

The angel, well, is one of those…”how does this guy fit into the picture?” questions. Nothing to get hung up on, but interesting non-the-less.

Pencil Holders & Distractions

OK, so I haven’t done too much art the past week, just some sketching. But the Illustration Friday topic for this week has been creating some interesting ideas in my head (more to come).

Anyway, I’ve been busy making this!

PencilHolder

No screws, no nails, just glue and dowel rods! Its not perfect, but I had a blast making it. The wood was from a broken door in our house (notice the top and botton, and sides of the box, are made from the panels of the door). I had to strip the paint and do a whole bunch of sanding, but it was worth the effort.

I finished this yesterday, and then started on an easal…I’ll show you when I finish.

Idle (IF)

Illustration Friday - Idle

Illustration Friday - Idle

This is my first foray into the Illustration Friday world! I sketched this out yesterday evening and had a blast doing it. God knows that I have had my idle moments, seasons, etc. in my life…and this is exactly how it makes me feel!

“Laziness casts into a deep sleep, And an idle man will suffer hunger.” Proverbs 15:19. (what’s funny is that I didn’t look up the scripture until after I drew the picture!)

Here I am.

Illustration is what I’ve always wanted to do, always an abiding passion, always.

So here I am, blogging. I won’t promise a whole lot of words forthcoming, but it may happen. I’m more interested in images these days. Words fail. Images live.

It is my hope that in the midst of the flooded world of images mine may be a beacon to the One who is the True Light, Jesus. All this is for His glory, not mine. If anyone ever sees otherwise, feel free to let me know.
